Why public links reveal more than you expect
Cybernews recently reported that shared ChatGPT links are showing up in Google search results. The feature is meant to let users collaborate, but it also leaves entire conversations open for anyone to read.
At first glance, a shared link might seem harmless. Many people use it to quickly show a friend a clever prompt or a helpful answer. Because these pages don't require a login, that friend can view the chat without creating an account. Unfortunately, the same openness allows search engines to crawl and archive the content.
A single Google search using the distinct ChatGPT link pattern returns thousands of conversations. Some include full names, email addresses, location details or proprietary business information. Others contain personal stories that users likely never intended for a wider audience. Since the shared pages lack an expiration date, they remain online indefinitely unless manually deleted.
What Went Wrong
The root cause is the absence of access controls. When you create a shared link, OpenAI does not give you the option to add a password or time limit. Anyone with the link can view the chat, and search engines treat it like a public web page. Many users underestimate this risk and assume that deleting a conversation in their own account will remove the shared copy. In reality, the shared page lives on until you explicitly delete it through the unique link.

Another incident surfaced on Reddit where users found links exposing HR discussions. These chats included names, job histories and even salary negotiations. While no malicious intent was involved, the exposure highlighted how easy it is to overlook the risks.
