The 20-minute computer reset: a free checklist for messy files
Here is a small exercise you can do before lunch. Set a timer for 20 minutes and clean one part of your computer.
Minutes 1 to 5: choose one place
Pick your desktop, Downloads folder, or one project folder. Do not start with the entire computer. Open one place and sort what is visible.
Minutes 6 to 12: make three decisions
- Keep active files where you work.
- Move finished work into an Archive folder.
- Delete duplicates only after opening the files or comparing their dates.
Rename anything you will need again. Use the subject and date: Team-training-2026-09 is more useful than new2final.docx.
Minutes 13 to 17: check the backup
Ask yourself: if this laptop disappeared tonight, where would I recover the important files? A synced folder is convenient, but it is not always a separate backup. Open your backup service or drive and confirm that one important file is there.
Minutes 18 to 20: write the rule
Write one sentence for future you: "New project files go in..." Put it somewhere visible. A system you can explain is a system someone else can follow.
Why this belongs in Emply
Basic computer confidence is a learning outcome too. Emply can turn this checklist into a short onboarding activity, ask for a before-and-after screenshot, and give the learner a next task instead of another generic course.
Use the checklist free. The point is not a perfect desktop. The point is fewer lost hours.
